How Big is Infinity



We talked a lot yesterday about the limitations of Rizo paper and lessons.  Today lets begin our Math class with a video for TEDed.  This is a collection of talks and lectures about a variety of topics.  

Today we will focus on this page dedicated to mathematics. "8 Math topics that Blow Your Mind" and specifically we will watch How Big is Infinity.

  1. 1. Yes, it was presented clearly, and he had evidence for everything he was explaining. Though it did get a little confusing when it got to the decimal numbers, but i do somewhat understand it.

    2. The numbers were a bit spread around but, especially in the fractions, they put diffrent colors to seperate the numbers and put diffrent brackets with diffrent colors. I actually liked that adn it made me less confused.

  2. 1) I did like the way the information was presented i actually understood it but then at one point i just didnt know what he was talking about i only understood the begning the rest didnt make sense to me.

    6. I think the title was very accurate. They mostly talked about how big numbers are especially, in the part with the all the different fractions. At the beginning I was confused because, they were talking about matching numbers up, but later on I understood how it went with the topic. The title tells us accurately about what the video is going to be about and it stays in topic.

    2. 7 minutes is too short but this is a brief explanation of a very large thing. If anything to understand the full extent of what the guy means will take much longer then we think.

    4. I'm actually greatful for learning this in a few minutes. If her were to teach this to us in a different way with a longer video, I wouldn't really want to watch it. He taught us briefly about this topic like Talha mentioned however, he didn't get in to the subject too deeply. I agree with Navdeep absolutely.

  4. He divided everything up into a manner that we can understand, but some of what he was explaining was too fast for my brain to soak in and confused me. But I understand what he's trying to explain; that even the smartest mathematicians out there don't know some things that are unexplainable because infite can be larger and larger no matter how big it is, and there are always many possibilities you may not be able to find but maybe others can in one way or another.

    1. I actually did enjoy it, because he went into such depths to support it. But it was-like I've said before- too fast for my brain to sort it out and stick it into my brain. When something is being explained to me I prefer being explained to visually, but when I'm learning I also have to skim through it to make sure I understand, such as repeating what's been said and done in my head, so it takes quite a bit of time. But the way he displayed several examples helped me get a better understanding. Knowing theories and stuff like this are interesting and sometimes halp me get a better understanding.

    4. I agree Fatma! Learning the history of math. Many people think math is boring, but I ACTUALLY ENJOYED this part of math. Many people may ask why we have to do math, but maybe learning the background might help.

    2. It doesn't always depend on how LONG the answer was. It actually depends on they FORMAT that it is presented. So to me, it was very understandable and the point was clear to ME.

    5. Danyal, if it were to be more than 7 minutes, wouldn't it bore you? We are learning things in a different way. If it were to be our normal ways, 7 min would be short but, since this is the new way using diagrams, this version of video is not too short at all. They give several information at the same time so it goes faster. When we learn normally, we present one information at a time so it takes longer.

  6. 2. I find this type of math question very interesting. It's different, I've never done or thought about anything like it. But i know if i do attempt to try it, i will get very, very confused. It's challenging, someone could get lost easily doing it, and that's why i like it, if i don't lose my mind trying to do it.

  8. 1: i really like the information that he tell us in the video because he explains us about numbers in highly detail.. like the decimal.. whole numbers.. fractions. we can't find all the decimals, whole numbers or fractions it is hard because there are too much of them; but we only knew few of them.. the decimals we can't match them like we can match the pairs of 2 things/objects with a same number because if w match try to match them the answer would be different everytime.

    1. As I clearly recall from the video there are endless possibilities for whole numbers,and fractions which are possible to find..Although for decimals it go on continuously,So that I'd say would be hard for our endless attempts.After all you are right that decimals cant be exactly matched.

  9. First of all, this video was awesome. So yes I liked how it was presented. The person told us about infinate numbers and how there are some things that can't be solved ewven in math. But the way he showed us was simple but still complicated. Also the way he was talking about all the unknown things in math, he said it with a lot of curiousity and joy that it was hard not to crack a smile. Also I like how there was a little animation with the first few examples and him in his 4th grade class

    3. No, definitely not. I mean when genius's like mathematicians can't solve it and have also come to the conclusion that it is insolvable. It's just to big for our minds to even properly process. If anything, the closest we can get to finding more about infinite numbers may be because of our technology.

  10. I liked the way the information was presented because the video made sense, if it didnt make sense the information was presented poorly. Also he showed us what would be a long lecture in like 7 minutes. Also he didnt make it boring, he used colors and different edits to make it more interesting.

    1. Your right on how he presented all that info in like 7 minutes.But in those 7 minutes he explained alot of things.I'm pretty sure if it was longer nobody would even bother paying attention to it.Adding creativity and wise words to explain was why the video partially made sense.

  11. Q1: I did like the way the information was presented because it reminds me of the way khanacademy teaches. Also, I like the way khan teaches.
    Q2: I do find it interesting because it means there is much more to math than we already know and that there could be an even greater use for mathematics than we've ever thought of. An example of this could e that, based on numbers, we could possibly tell the future and/or possibly read peoples' minds based on how they work out math problems.
    Q3: I thought "Of course... There has to be something out there in the mathematic world that can't be solved or that we haven't been introduced to yet. It's elementary."

  12. 2:I find it really interesting because i never knew my self that there are too much whole numbers, fractions or decimals.. i just thought that there are few of them but when he show them in the video it was liek there are too much of them just like the stars. and even if i try to find all of them i will never because they are confusing to me. So, it was really interesting to know about the numbers...

  14. 1. Yes, it was pretty cool. At the end I liked how he said "Even Math has its limitations." From this video I learned that Math still has unanswered problems and it’s almost like a mysterious topic when it comes to infinity. The man is stating that infinity cannot be measured. He told us about the history of it, and I thought it was nice to know all that information. Although I have to admit it was a bit confusing at some parts. At times I couldn't keep up because I don't really have a clear idea of what "Pi" is. I never learned about much of it, so it became a bit complicated.
    2. I found it interesting even though I knew that infinity could not be measured. I didn't understand much but I figured that math has come to its limitations and infinity could not be measured. But I would like to study more about "Pi". Because I just didn't get that part.
    3. I think that’s what makes Math mysterious. There are still questions to be answered however; they will never really know the answer. That’s exactly what makes math have its balance. That not even some answers can be answered.

  15. Yes, I did like the way the information was presented. It was explained in detail and had pictures to explain every word of what the man is saying to make it simpler/easier to understand. He explained it all the way down to the core of the apple and I really liked that because it made is easier to understand with all the examples usually in videos they don’t have this whole proper show .By that i mean when he was showing the decimals he had things circled or underlined and it was shown clearly on the video. This is video was an excellent video quality.

  17. 1. Yes, I did like the way the information was presented, he went step by step from the beginning to the end with a lot of detail. It made it easier to understand what his point was. As well, by using a variety of different examples it gave different a point of view. Even though in the beginning I understood what he has said, when the video went on it was confusing with all those fractions.

    2. 1st question: while watching it i was confused, but when i finished it made sense. i never understood numbers, so it was a little confusing.

      2nd question: well, not that i can think of. man-kind is very complex, especially with all the religions. what i mean is that today science and religion absolutely contradict each other, so lets say that i make a big speech about how we were related to monkeys, so many people would argue that its not true because there religion tells them otherwise.

      many scientists today still haven't unraveled the mysterys to man-kind.

  19. 1.Wow, really this is all I can say after I watched this interesting video. It's amazing! I mean I never thought of math this way! This video is more than just doing diffrent ways of numbers, it's the basic facts to understand. The way they present the infromation is eye catching. I didn't get confused since they presented everything visually with diffrent examples. I like the way they show the numbers or items matching. To me, it seemed like it was also color coded; they used diffrent colors for diffrent material or groups. To separate the circles outlining numbers and diffrent numbers (exp. even and odd) they used various color. The pictures made me keep watching and i understood many complicated things that would take forever to learn with words only.

  22. I find and see this Mathematical question very interesting.It's very hard to understant it but when you do, you see how Math is not perfect.Like they don't know if there anything between a desimol and a whole number and if ther was would it be a bigger infinity than a whole number.

What he was trying to say i understood it well.I like the way he did the hand example by closing 1 hand.its true because we can't find each decimal, fractions and whole number.he mixed up all the possible ways and presented to us in a wierd , yet funny way. so his overall performance was 4+ preformance.

    2. @hosni it depends on scientist and mathematicians to find the solutions,if a lot of famous mathematicians in the past couldn't figure this out it is likely with our technologies today but it is also quite unlikely.

  24. 1. I liked the way he explained everything. Instead of having some guy talking on a podium to an audience, he narrated everything while using graphics, which made it even more interesting. He explained everyhting using objects and stated facts that I never knew.

  28. 3: i was like shocked because i always think that the math have right answers everytime but sometimes we do mistakes and get the answer wrong.. but when i got to know that the math experts have different thoughts i was like 'wow", because it was they both don't even know the correct answer about the question that they are searching for..
    there would be some mistakes but i never thought that there would be a question in the world (in math)whose answer could be never found..

  30. 2.I found it quite interesting , especially because it had a history behind it so they had about 3-4 people trying to figure it out made it quite interesting but not only the history just the math its self.I found it a bit confusing in the middle of the video because ther have the decimal , irrational and a bunch of other words made it confusing because he did go back and forth

    1. Yes because it cathes my eye when any file of information is displayed in a new,innovative way. It's just not anything like reading out of a textbook.

    It goes at a much faster pace that not everybody can understand and use as a wise answer to some of lifes questions. It's like the devices we bring to school, you can use it an effective way or use it for ways that will not improve you.

    2. I do find this type of mathemathical question interesting because it's like discovering something truly significant. The significancy of this lesson is so indepth that it changes your view on things.One of things I like about these lesoons would be the straight forward attitude of the narrator.

    He goes straight to the fact and what he thinks about it in a reasonable amount of depth. I understood the whole video for 7 minutes, we can't even keep children in the assembly quiet for that long. Everything about this video is great but a little too sped-up.

    3. Well my reaction would be, WOW because really mathematics is supposed to be the answer to all things numberic yet, you can't find a obtainable answer. What also amazed me was that that theory drove him into sadness.

  36. 3. I got confused. My teachers used to tell me theres always an answer. I look at this video and they tell me theres no right answer. What scares me is that some guy got depressed from working so hard to find the answer, the question I have is, will anyone find the answer in the future? Are the people wrong, is there really an answer to this question? If so when?

  39. i think that the way the info was presented is great i liked how there was the chalkboard people However the info was kind of confusing because it was the first time learning these type of things also after watching the video a couple of times you start to get it.

    this topic is very interesting i never knew that there are still some things out there that mathematicians can't solve and that math still has things that we have not yet progressed i am starting to feel as if there is always something like when you think all math equations are solved there is always a new one like the ipod you think what can be better then the i pod 5 and then the ipod 6 will be better somehow or someway.

    i found it shocking when there is no right answer to some questions it is hard to think that math is still expanding till this date it also makes me feel better ; now we have something to solve in math and maybe even be the first person to solve it.

    4. @navdeep: i dissagree with you like how you said that the title has to be "the unanswered question".. but if you notice the video is totally about infinity and how big is it in Decimals,Even numbers and Fractions.. and it's only like a 55 seconds of him just telling about a question which can never be answered.. so i think that the title is good enough for the video..

  41. 3) i was scared, i dont know why. its just like the universe, its endless with billions and billions of stars and planets we see today. we cannot know for sure if there is other life anywhere, it makes me feel small and insignificant.

    just like the universe, we have no full mathematical or logical explanation.....scary.

  47. My reaction was "See some things are NOT possible" people say that "Nothing is Impossible" and in this video they have been proven wrong. I think that there MAY be a way of solving this but, at the moment we do not have a method of figuring it out. Therefore, I wasn't shocked as much, because my heads always have been saying that some things are not possible and that one day it will be proven.

I think this type of mathimatical question was interesting because it makes sense but at the same time it doesn't make sense .Its a really interesting math question because people can't come to a conclusion about it it just seems to keep on going and this mathimatical question is really unsolvable from my point of view .

  52. 2.Yes very because like many mysteries of the universe, we don't know the answer to it or how to explain it. That's the fun of it. These questions question every theory we have on the subject to the point where an answer is impossible, if not nearly impossible to achieve. These questions really make us think and makes us appreciate the beauty of different things

  54. Q.3 I feel a little more relax to see math not perfect and that ther no right answer.I some time feel math is hard but when i know ther no right answer i seem more relax.

  58. My reaction is always thinking that I did something wrong. I've never really come across a mistake before other than this year when others found the mistake, because I do it wrong, or don't pay attention to the questions, because I mostly just want to get it over with. It gets me more confused though because I just think about all the work that would have to be done to be able to answer it or it gets me wondering how math makes sense. When the root of some things don't have answers is intersting but confusing. It's amazing how there aren't answers for some mathematical questions but we can still solve other questions and it's like those unanswered questions don't even matter.

  61. I really apreciated the way the information was presented. It was very creative because he had original ideas, for example: the wikipedia on the chalkboard ideas. In the end, it was entertaining to watch. However, the video got a little bit confusing when they introduced the continium theory and how people tried to testify, also, how they introduced rational and irrational numbers. It went a little too fast.

  68. Yes, I really find this type of mathematical question very interesting. This is because, I would always ask how many numbers there were since I was very small.Only in third grade I learned that there was such a thing as infinity. I didn't completely understand this, but after this video I understand it completely. Not only did I learn JUST this piece of information, but know I know the history of math. It's like a story and it makes it fun to read about. In all the math curriculum, I never learned about how and who invented math. It's a new thing for me. It's like talking about impossible. Like we are making up stories using imagination. We end up trying to answer questions that can't clearly be answered. I have to admit, this is fun and I would like to do more compared to our normal math studies.

  69. 3. It was a bit surprising although, it kind of made a feeling of mystery and fun in there. It's like something that is different rather what we learn everyday. It's a bit outstanding knowing the word but, not knowing what it means. It doesn't really feel right, it impacts this much that I feel that I am learning a new language or subject. There should be a new subject in school with "mathematical history" to completely separate math from this mystery.

  70. 1.Yes indeed I liked the information presented,it was in a well understandable manner,and clear in all ways.The idea of having a chalkboard was quite neat throughout the entire 7 minutes of the video.how soothing the man spoke clearly gives in that he's sure of what he is explaining accordingly to his knowledge and understanding.Having the diagrams made it easy to break down and understand what is being explained.IT was well explained.Also it was in 7 minutes.In those 7 minutes i had a whole new perspective of math.Theres no right or wrong.

    1. 2.Yes I do actually like this sort of mathematical questions,because it gives me a chance to embrace a harder challenge which at some point of like i'm most likely to occur/face with.Life is unexpected yuo never know what happens.At any moment life can slap you with the most unexpected things perhaps "math"? Math is basically everything and everywhere.I need to learn in order to suceed better in life.So i'm okay liking this sort of math.

    2. 3.I was actually very shocked that even in Mathematics there is no right or obtainable right answer.Throughout my entire life,I thought there was always a answer to math,no matter what it takes.After watching the video I realised there isn't always an answer to everything,especially math.Even the smartest people didnt know te answer to decimals.

  72. i throught that that was preety cool because when u get a question wrong on a test you can tell the teacher there is no right anwser in math, but no i think that only happens when u really go in to extreme math uyou could stumble across an anwser you cant find
